Adrenal Fatigue Symptoms and early Cures before too late

A healthy person should be able to wake up with a rejuvenated mind and body, ready to tackle stressors of the day with ease and grace, and then toward the night naturally slow down and anticipate a sweet dream for the night.

I used to envy those people. These days, those people are rare. I have met one person who has been consistently able to maintain strong adrenal glands throughout the overwhelming university years. He was an exception. For all the busy, stress filled years I had known him, he never showed one adrenal fatigue symptom. However, many of us have a fallible system and must be vigilant, otherwise adrenal fatigue could sabotage our finance and health. It did to me!

My theory is that people who grew up with a strong foundation such as nutritious prenatal care, and a home with healthy food culture enjoy extra protection from stress.

Symptoms of Adrenal Fatigue are progressive. You start with one or two. The more symptoms you experience, the longer it takes to restore your health. Stay vigilant and nip it at the bud!

The stressed stage- Insomnia

Most of us are tired and need coffee to get going in the morning. I was especially bad. I wonder if I had ever lived more than 6 consecutive months without crushing. My sleep schedule was upside down- I slept during the day and stayed awake through the night. Opps, I jumped ahead. Before it got to that point, it started with insomnia.

The first sign of adrenal fatigue is insomnia. This happens because the adrenal glands release too much cortisol through the day, and some of the hormone carry on to the night and keep the body awake. If this isn't fixed, the condition could progress to the next stage- the wired and tired stage.

How to reverse this stage:

  • No coffee after 9 am
  • Eat regular meals on time! No sugar or high carb for breakfast, which should consist of proteins, fat, and vegetable ( low glycemic index). For lunch, moderate carbs are allowed. Ditto for dinner. It is called the Adrenal Reset Diet
  • Moderate exercise before 2pm. Gentle yoga or walking after 2pm.
  • Walk 10000 steps a day

Try this Book of Sleep as one of the tools to help prepare your child for sleep. Or you can get creative and write a book for the child to help her understand how to unwind and sleep. This helps the baby to get on board with the sleep program because babies always ask "why?"

The wired and Tired Stage

During this state, your day and night is switched! You feel tired and sleepy in the morning, but often have energy spikes in the evening. Your energy level becomes inconsistent and erratic. Often, people who are suffering this state can predict when they will get a burst of energy- moments of clarity and productivity, in between fatigue and mental fog.

For college students, it can disguise as Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome. Perhaps there is no such thing as Delayed Sleep Phrase Syndrome as we are evolved to live according to the rise and dawn of the Sun. What we think is DSPS might be the second stage of Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome.

This stage could take months or years to develop. Months of continuous stressors such as worry, illness, financial concerns, or lost of loved ones can take you there. Years of lower stressors such as bad sleeping habit or poor food choice can also bring you to this stage.

How to reverse this stage:

  • No coffee after 9 am
  • Adrenal Reset Diet plan.
  • Take ginger and cinnamon with tea or add them to foods or soup to help with stress response.
  • Take Rhodiola for the morning and Ashwaganda anytime. Ashwaganda helps correct cortisol level- it boosts energy for the morning, and reduce it at night.
  • Exercise twice a week in the morning. Gentle yoga or walking in the afternoon or evening. Home stretch before sleep
  • Sleep 4 hours later than last time each day until you sleep at 10pm.
  • Light Therapy
  • Meditation once or twice a day for 5 minutes

The Crushed Stage

Crushed stage is depressing. I had been there before. I could literally do nothing. This was a vulnerable time. Never let yourself get to this stage if you could help it.

It would take 6 to 8 weeks to recover from this stage, but only if you put recovery on your top priority.

Here is a list of common signs of the crushed stage:

  • Low blood pressure
  • Poor blood circulation
  • Debilitating fatigue
  • Mid-body fat gain
  • Lost of muscle
  • Gas and bloating
  • Craving of sugar or salt

During this stage, it is important that you give up all your responsibility and get as much help as you can. It is unrealistic to "will" yourself to wholeness because you won't even have that willpower at all. The solution is to rest. Be lazy. At this crippling stage, even simple meditation is an uphill battle.

How to reverse this stage:

  • Adrenal Reset Diet
  • Sleep at least 8 to 10 hours a day
  • Delegate your tasks to others. Get help.
  • 45 minutes of light therapy in the morning
  • Ginseng for the morning
  • Licorice for the morning
  • Chamomile for the evening
  • Guided imagery (a passive form of meditation. Watch free YouTube videos for guided meditation or imagery for relaxation and sleep)
