Symptoms of teeth grinding

The topic on teeth grinding can be boring, but not with this site, because I have dug deep and found out that bruxism (teeth grinding) almost always connects to bigger potential health problems. Teeth grinding maybe the only health problem you will ever have to face if you can make it stop now. By getting rid of the teeth grinding problem you are going to prevent a whole host of many other conditions. 

Do not underestimate the implications of bruxism. Nip it at the bud before it progresses into something worse, such as cavities, TMJ, migraine, chronic pains, tooth losses, sleeping disorder, or something crippling. 

I myself was a teeth grinder. In my 20s, my teeth were still strong, but the damage were obvious to my dentist. In my 30s, my lifestyle experienced a big change and all of a sudden my teeth started to develop cavities, and chip off bit and pieces, it was scary. My story hopefully will help all of you prevent something similar from happening. 

Symptoms of bruxism include:

  • Hot, cold, or sweet sensitivity in the teeth
  • Anxiety, stress, and tension
  • Depression
  • Insomnia
  • Sore or Painful jaw
  • Eating disorder
  • Click sounds when jaw moves
  • Headache
  • Earache 
  • Eating disorder
  • Tooth wear, shorten tooth
  • Gum recession

When someone tells you they hear you grinding your teeth during sleep, that's the most definite sign for bruxism. This is also the best way to tell if you have stopped grinding teeth, and I will tell you how. 

The following are risk factors that can cause bruxism:

  • Sleeping disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea
  • Bad bites, malocclusion, crowded teeth
  • Having too much coffee or caffeinated foods
  • Alcohol consumption
  • Smoking
  • Too much anxiety and stress
  • Irregular sleeping schedule due to shift work, or delay sleep phrase syndrome
  • Medication such as SSRIs, stimulants, amphetamines
  • Gluten intolerancefoods allergies
  • Minerals deficiencies
  • IBS, leaky gut, celiac diseases, acid reflux, digestion problems
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
  • Vitamins deficiencies

If you have bruxism, relax, although the many risk factors above made it seem like the odds are against you. Don't worry. Most of the supplements recommended in this site will solve several or more of the risk factors above, while promoting a good quality sleep. 

The good news is that many of the risk factors and symptoms listed here are interconnected, and share the common causes. By cutting out foods that often time result in food intolerance or allergy, and taking vitamins and minerals, most people start to get better sleep and stop grinding teeth altogether. 

Many people on the autistic spectrum (including ADHD) suffer from teeth grinding. Autism often connects with celiac diseases. In some cases of autism, the condition can be reversed if the digestive problem is cured.
